Many people are considering a raw food diet for weight loss. There are many advantages to this type of eating. Here are some reasons to consider this plan.

Flavor

It is important to have flavorful foods when losing weight. Many uncooked foods on this plan have natural flavor. You may not have the need for spices, salt, or pepper. This can help to eliminate boredom that comes with many plans. If the meals are bland and tasteless it is hard to stay with it.

Nutrition

Proper nutrition is very important for everyone. It is especially important for keeping your weight under control. Many people follow fad diets that are lacking in basic nutrition. This can bring on a host of problems. You may get unusually tired. You may feel run down and weary in time.

When you eat uncooked, you get all of the necessary enzymes. They are essential for proper digestion. They also help your body absorb necessary nutrients. Many of these enzymes are destroyed with heat from cooking.

Health

When you do not get proper nutrition, your entire body suffers. It can decrease your immune function. This can make you sick. You may be more susceptible to colds and flu. You may also be more susceptible to certain types of infections and disease.

You are only eating plant based meals. There is no meat. Many types of meat are linked to cholesterol. A lower cholesterol diet is good for your heart and cardiovascular system. Some people include sushi in their meal plans. Fish is not linked to high cholesterol.

Cravings

Many type of eating plans can result in cravings. This makes it very difficult to stick to any type of program. With this uncooked diet, you get proper nutrition. You also are eating meals that taste good. This can help you stick to your goals and help with your obesity concerns.

Calories

Your meals will be naturally low in calories. This can be a help when you are trying to shed extra pounds. You are also eating things that are high in fiber. This will help to fill you up. You may stay full longer, also.

Energy

Many people claim that they have more energy. You may be more likely to exercise. When you feel better, you may enjoy a more active lifestyle. All of these things can help to burn additional calories.

Things that you can eat

All types of vegetables are available on this plan. You can also enjoy the flavor of fresh fruits. Dried fruits like raisins are also on the list. You can get protein from things like beans, seeds, nuts, and legumes. Fresh juice is also a part of this program. Soups, sauces, and many meals made raw, may be acceptable.

Sprouted vegetables are a good thing to consider. There are many types of sprouts that you can grow in your own kitchen. It is not just about beans. Alfalfa, cabbage, wheat, and radishes, are just a few of them.

Many people recommend dehydrated fruits and vegetables. It is a good way to store them. In some types of fruits, it intensifies the sweetness. The natural sugars are more concentrated.

Summary

A raw food diet can be very effective for losing weight. Good tasting meals may help to eliminate boredom with eating. You will be receiving excellent nutrition. This can lead to better health and increased immune function. Your meals will be low in calories, naturally. This will help you keep your daily calorie intake, down. Proper nutrition may also help to eliminate food cravings. You may have more energy and feel like exercising more often. This will help to burn off extra calories.

In this article, we look at some real acknowledged benefits and also how to prepare healthier foods, however it does not purport to be a scientific study and it is still best to seek advice from your general practitioner or a registered dietitian.

Five main food groups:

How to classify “healthy food” will be different for just about every person. We often hear statements such as “you must eat 5 portions of fruits & vegetables every day” or others will tell you that eating all your food raw. There is no doubt though that eating a balanced diet should comprise the five main food groups: Grains, Fruit and Vegetables, Proteins, Dairy Products and Sugar & Fat. There are various proportional suggestions to be found on the Internet; mostly these are illustrated in a pyramid or pie chart format. Five benefits of eating healthy foods:

1. Very few of us don’t at some stage feel that our lives are just so busy that our energy levels are too low to cope with all the demands. Eating healthier will provide your body with all the vitamins, minerals it requires to produce the energy needed. In addition, of course that means that you will in fact have more time even though you may spend more time preparing your food.

2. Protecting your body against illnesses and falling prey to every germ is the task of your body’s immune system. A healthier eating regime will boost your immune system and help to protect against diseases such as heart diseases, cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes.

3. Mental alertness is essential for living optimally and eating healthier will help your brain to remain alert and sharp even if you are roaring towards “old age”.

4. Maintaining a healthy weight depends not only on being physically fit, but also requires a healthy varied meal plan. Being fit helps you to cope with the mental and physical strains and stresses of everyday life.

5. Because your body will be in top condition and able to draw on sustained nutrition for its basic needs it will recover much quicker from an illness or you having had surgery.

The five essential tips for preparing healthy foods:

You may be put off by the thought of having to make an about turn immediately and it may be wise to phase in the changes gradually, but in a structured fashion.

1. Take the time to plan meals – be it on a weekly or monthly basis. This will reduce the time you spend on preparing meals.

2. Start by reducing (not eliminating) the amount of fat, salt and sugar you use when cooking. Replace some salt by using herbs to enhance your food and use non-stick saucepans and to change your cooking methods from frying to steaming or grilling.

3. If you are a salad junkie, you can bulk it up and improve the protein content by using grilled chicken or fish or even a combination of pulses such as beans and lentils. Also, be aware of the contents of the dressings you use – store bought options are often high in sugar and fat. Making your own simple vinaigrette is a healthier option.

4. Start introducing fruits and vegetables into your meals. Use fruit in smoothies at breakfast, not only are you able to use milk or yogurt and seasonal fruit into your meal plan it gives you a boost at the start of the day and is a portable meal that you can eat in the car or on the train or bus. A quick and easy meal to prepare is a stir-fry packed with a variety of vegetable. It is also an ingenious method of adding vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli, which many people (especially children) are not keen to eat.

5. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your food options. You can use your favorite recipes and try out different ingredients. As an example when you are making a cheese sauce use low fat or fat free milk. Reduce the cheese content by adding some mustard, which will give you a flavor boost.

Making slight changes in your preparation methods and ingredients can ensure that you reap the benefits of preparing healthy food without having to compromise on the quality and flavor of your food.

In this article, we would like to give you an easy to understand guide, looking at what it is and what the health benefits of whole grains are for your body.

A grain kernel has three parts: a central “germ, ” surrounded by starchy “endosperm” and bran, which forms the outer layer. To effectively metabolize and digest grain fully, it is necessary for us to consume all three parts of the kernel. Millers provide food producers with refined white flour, having stripped it from almost all nutrition, for no reason other than consumers who want blemish free food. Simply put the difference between refined and unrefined (whole grain) grain is that the germ and bran have been removed to produce the latter.

As one of the main food groups, grain is an important part of our daily food requirements. Corn, barley, wheat, rice, quinoa and oats are all popular forms of grains. These are all used in various forms to produce pasta, tortillas, breakfast cereals and breads.

Some of the important reasons for eating grain in its whole form:

Nutritional content: Whole grains contain vital phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals and these are mainly concentrated in the germ. Both the germ and bran are stripped in the refining process – for example refined white flour contains negligible amounts of vitamin E and less than a quarter of the original kernels zinc and magnesium. Our bodies require B-complex vitamins to effectively break down the carbohydrates contained in the endosperm of the kernel – so it is easy to see why we should be eating the “whole” grain kernel to really benefit.

Fibre needs: Fibre (the bran) is essential to increase the bulk in our bowels and assists with keeping our bowel movements regular. Slowing down the speed at which the food moves through the digestive tracts fibre assists the body in controlling the release of glucose. Not only does this make us “feel fuller for longer” this slower release process controls blood sugar levels in the blood stream. In return, this lowers the risk of incurring type two diabetes, which is a disease that is rapidly spreading in people of all ages.

Examples of some specific effects on particular organs: The liver is our “detoxifying” organ and wheat encourages its functioning. The heart, pancreas and spleen also benefit from the nutritional content of WHEAT. It also assists the body to cope with symptoms attributed to the effects of stress on our bodies.

Containing a mixture of high protein, fibre and complex B vitamins, BARLEY is a grain used to treat hepatitis, reduces tumors and assists with the lowering of cholesterol levels in the body.

The high silicon content of OATS assists with good bone and connective tissue formation. Its high fibre content makes it a popular choice as a mild laxative.

When our body suffers injury or is recovering after surgery it increases the rate of body protein production. RYE contains high levels of lysine, the most important amino acid the body needs to do this. In general, it helps increase stamina and assists in muscle building.

For those of us who are unfortunate to be gluten intolerant, BUCKWHEAT is a good substitute as it has an acceptable flavor and contains no gluten. It is easy to grow as an organic crop as it is member of the hardy rhubarb family.

Our thyroid, adrenal and immune systems are essential to the functioning of our bodies. FLAX is an excellent means to fortify these systems. Enriching the blood, improving energy levels as well as enhancing hair and skin development are other properties of this grain.

Practical and easy decisions such as buying wild or brown rice, barley, rolled oats and whole-wheat pastas and bread will increase your intake of whole grains on a daily basis. This will ensure that your body can benefit from the health benefits of the whole grains and ensure a better quality of life.

Are whole foods, organic food, and raw foods all the same? Join us for a journey to find out what foods are whole foods. Where to source them and how to prepare meals our families will love.

The keyword on this trip is unprocessed. Whole food is a term, which refers to foods that have not been subjected to some form of process or refinement or at a push has been exposed to minimal interference to its original form. These type of foods are not always organic and vice-versa.

Many or in fact most of the foods in our supermarkets have been processed in some form or another. In their natural form, foods retain their nutritional content. Once sugar, additives, salt or fat are added to improve the flavor or extend its shelf life food loses some if not most of its nutritional value it is no longer a whole food. Cooking food has the same effect and it is for this reason that a diet of whole foods will often contain a high percentage of raw foods.

Where would you go to find the best whole foods available?

Each season has its own crop of fruits, vegetables meat and fish and these will be the best to buy at any given time.

Buy local: In many cities and towns, regular farmers markets are a fixed item on the calendar. Find out what foods are in season and restrict yourself to buying only those. A true farmer’s market will be one where you will find fresh unprocessed whole produce. The one exception is produce that has been packaged in conveniently sized portions. These markets are a source of free-range eggs and chicken.

Should you be fortunate enough to have an independent butcher in your area, you can find out where they source their meat. Buy as much local unprocessed produce as you can. This will of course encourage sellers to increase their volumes of whole foods.

Convenience VS. Nutritional Value: As with all things in life we do have to make trade-offs from time to time. If you are not able to find a suitable fresh ingredient, the next best choice will be freshly frozen foods. Peas are a good example as they are mostly picked and quick-frozen within hours. You may have to do some research to establish which brands are the best and do not add any preservatives or dyes for the sake of appearances. However, there will be a loss of some nutritional value, but nothing near that of other processed foods. Never buy more than you will use for your family before the food starts going off.

Preparing Foods with Whole Foods: Where possible, use fruit and vegetables in their natural state and if you do decide to cook then try to use methods such as steaming or baking in the oven rather than frying. Make generous use of herbs and spices to flavor your food rather than adding salt, sugar, sweeteners or fat. Preferably use butter and not margarine and in limited quantities.

You may ask why we should avoid cooking food where possible. Whole foods contain the enzymes required to help your body digest the food and these enzymes are destroyed when exposed to heat exceeding 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Ever wondered why you feel tired after eating – if the enzymes have been destroyed your body will have to use alternative energy from its own resources to digest your meal.

Eating these type of foods can initially be a bit difficult, as we are not used to the flavors. This is why it is important to plan your meals and introduce the foods by adding or substituting to your tried and trusted recipes.

As your and your family’s taste buds become accustomed to new flavors, it will become easier to increase the volume of whole foods in your meals. Use options such as smoothies to introduce new fruits to your family. Bulk up salads with a variety of fresh green leaves (baby spinach, rocket, broccoli leaves and even dandelion leaves) and add steamed fish or grilled chicken with homemade dressings using vegetable oils and lemon rather than vinegars.

The road to eating truly whole foods at every meal, every day may be a long and windy one – but once you and your family start feeling the benefits and living healthy lives you will be happy that you started the journey of a lifetime.

They are organic and high in nutrition. They taste good and are naturally low in calories. They are not difficult to make. Here are instructions for growing your own sprouts.

Ingredients

You will need seeds, water, and a container to grow the seeds in. It is best to use seeds that are not treated with anything. Organic seeds are best. This will insure maximum nutrition and germination. The best bean seeds to use are mung, garbanzo, and lentil. You can buy a kit to grow your seeds in. This will make it easier. However you can make them with common household items, also. If you use household items, you may utilize things like bowls or colanders.

Rinse and sort the seeds

Rinse your seeds off. Sort through them and remove any type of hard things that will not grow. It is best to rinse and soak with filtered water. If tap water is used, any contaminated may be absorbed into your plants. Also, the water for soaking and rinsing should be slightly warm. Do not use hot or warm tap water. It is best to warm it in the microwave for a few seconds. Hot or warm tap water may contain contaminants. Place cheesecloth over the lid of your container. You want a material that will let the seeds breathe. Do not cover them tightly. However, if there is no lid, they may dry out too easily.

Soak the seeds

Put the seeds in your soaking container. It can be a bowl or jar. Add water. Completely cover the seeds. Make sure there is an additional inch or 25 millimeters of water on top of them. Do not place too many seeds in the container. Think of them as popcorn. They will swell up, several times their original size. The seeds should soak for about ten to twelve hours.

Strain

You need to strain your seeds. Pour the water from the container, through the lid. Make sure there is no standing water left. You will need to rinse and strain these seeds often. Three or four times a day is not too frequent. After you rinse them, keep them in a warm, dark area. Inside a closet or kitchen cabinet may work well. Make sure that they do not dry out.

Growing

Keep a close eye on your seeds. It may take three to four days for them to grow large enough. Make sure that you water and rinse them, frequently.

Harvest

After they are large enough, rinse them one more time. You can store them in the refrigerator. They will keep for several days.

Tips

Make sure that your seeds never dry out completely. Do not leave them in water after the initial soaking. Do not use water that is too warm or too cold. Make sure that you rinse them often enough. You can grow them in partial sunlight. They may not be as crisp or white. However, they may have more nutritional value.

Summary

It is not difficult to grow your own sprouts. You may buy kits, but you can also make them from household items. Choose good seeds that are organic. Soak the seeds for about ten to twelve hours. Rinse the seeds properly. Keep them covered with a breathable lid. Keep them in a warm place with little to no sunlight. Make sure that your rinse them often.
